At Mannington, we have a long history of finding ways to engage designers in our product development process. As a 100 year old, family owned American company with manufacturing locations in 9 communities around the country, we are also deeply committed to producing local goods, keeping jobs in the US and sharing the best of communities where we live and work.
So we brought these two ideas together in a brand new product development program called DESIGN LOCAL. Partnering with A&D in Austin, Chicago, DC and San Francisco to connect and create in a whole new way.
In each city, a team of designers teamed up in a 2-day design immersion. Beginning with an inspiration scramble, each team member was given two and a half hours to explore the city with a camera and sketchpad, searching for ideas and inspiration. Then, coming back together, they shared their favorite ideas in a "pin it or bin it" session, presenting a strong point of view and seeing what patterns emerged as they built upon each other's ideas. At the end of 24 hours, they had come up with sketches, photographs, and color palettes, to serve as a starting point for product development.
Over the following months, each team collaborated with Mannington's product designers and colorists – developing coordinating patterns of carpet and LVT. Evolving the magic of the initial idea into pattern, texture and color of physical product.
From 2/4 to 2/25 of 2013, voting will be open online. The Grand Prize Winning team, selected by popular vote through this Web site, will develop their collection – which will be featured at NeoCon 2013, in a national ad campaign, be promoted by official media partner Interiors & Sources and other press, and become a full product collection with Mannington Commercial!
